The Tarspotter platform is designed to support fungicide management decisions for tar spot disease in corn. The recommended intervention window aligns with the V10 to R3 growth stages.
Tar spot arises from fungal spores that infect corn, leading to disease development. University research indicates that the appearance of Tar spot can be forecast using several weather-related variables. Accordingly, models have been developed to forecast the field-level risk of tar spot infection.
Farmers can input site-specific details about their corn fields into the app, which then integrates these inputs with the research-based models to inform the timing for tar spot treatment.
Tarspotter uses GPS coordinates to determine whether weather conditions during corn flowering in a given field were favorable for tar spot development. The models rely on real-time weather data to project favorable dates for tar spot across most corn-growing regions. Based on these projections and crop phenology, a site-specific risk forecast is generated.
